Jump Start Your Metabolism

Everyone seems to be trying to lose weight these days and for some people it’s a slow metabolism that’s to blame. But how can you speed up a sluggish metabolism? Here are some facts about metabolism that may help you do it.

One key way to speed up your metabolism is to eat healthier foods. This doesn’t sound intuitive but junk food actually slows down your metabolism. All that sugar and fat tend to make your body go into stall mode. Carbohydrates, fatty food and junk food all have a slowing effect on your body.

Exercise is always a great way to put your metabolism into overdrive. Besides the calories burned during exercise your muscles will become more developed. Bigger, toned muscles will burn more calories per hour even while you’re sleeping. For best results, try to get a mix of aerobic exercise and anaerobic exercise like weightlifting. Mix it up from day to day to give your muscles a rest and to avoid getting bored with your routine.

Another way to keep your metabolism percolating is to avoid eating before bedtime. When you’re asleep everything in your body slows down and that includes digestion. If you eat a big meal or a snack right before bedtime your body doesn’t need it for energy at the moment so it is more likely to store what you ate as fat. Try to get your last meal in at least 3 hours before you turn out the lights.

Most people aren’t aware how important sleep is for metabolism. People who are sleep deprived experience an increase in blood sugar levels and that interferes with the your bodys’ ability to metabolize carbohydrates. Also, when you don’t get enough sleep your body increases production of cortisol which makes you feel hungrier. You need sleep for healthy functioning and that includes your metabolism.

These are just some of the ways you can pump up a sluggish metabolism. Adding exercise and switching to a healthier diet will have wide reaching health benefits for you. You will you lose weight, gain muscle and you’ll have more energy to burn so you’ll feel great, too.
